Why Are People So Mad About Netflix hit “Don’t Look Up”

Is it a movie, or Is that also a win for the climate?

Adam McKay’s catastrophic satire Don’t Look Up Many things at once: an illustration of our confused society, an initial cry of caution, and an extensive comedy by Anchorman’s writer / director. This fine balance has turned the star-studded Netflix film into a polarizing film.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that the satirical film Don’t Look Up, about our indifferent approach to dealing with global disasters, has become the second biggest hit of all time.

The film, co-produced by director Adam McKay and journalist David Sirota, continues to dominate (or at least feature) cultural dialogue a month after its release. Critics, audiences, and activists alike praised the film’s brutality, and the response highlighted the difficulty of conveying an urgent message with comedy.

Many activists see this as a victory for climate awareness – including some climate scientists and perhaps most vocal filmmakers.

Mack told journalist Eric Holthaus that he “literally doesn’t look up for the climate community.” Of course, when you make a movie for a special group of people – be they journalists or scientists or workers – who have invested deeply in the subtleties and frustrations of climate communication, you are sure not to please everyone.

That challenge was evident in creating the Don’t Look Up. As Mack told David Sims, he wrote the story about a planet-killing comet (and the inability of our society to work together to stop it) as a metaphor for climate change. But after the script was finished, production stopped for the epidemic and he saw the folly of real-life disasters surpassing his fantasy.

On Wednesday, an article in The New York Times told a story where the filmmakers faced some criticism for a climate action website designed to go along with the film. Disputes will be familiar to anyone in the niche group mentioned above: too much emphasis on personal lifestyle choices, such as food and domestic energy use, is not enough on government action and social transformation. Prominent climate activist Peter Kalmas announced on Twitter that he was working with McKay to refine the proposed points.

The point is – as I mentioned in my review when the film was first published – that this kind of dilemma exemplifies the harm of trying to promote social movement from an artistic work and vice versa. If Don’t Look Up is meant to be an exciting call to action, the fact that (spoiler alert!) Everyone dies in a fiery explosion in the end is a misleading choice. This is a practical and logical conclusion to the film’s fiction, but in the context of climate consolidation it makes for a defeatist message.

COVID-19, climate change and a planet-killing comet are very different crises. But the narrow-minded leaders of Don’t Look Up are unable to act against even the most obvious threat to existence. How close is the story to our own? And can its message make a difference?

We can agree on one thing: the fact that a film “made for the climate community” has become a mainstream commercial success is certainly significant. Even Julia Fox likes it!

Will any 2022 film surpass Spider-Man: No Way Home Box Office?

Spider-Man: No Way Home has grossed 1 billion (and is calculated) on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2021 at the December box office. Many things can be attributed to its success, the main one being nostalgia-driven narrative. More importantly, despite several high profile releases throughout the year, notably No Time to Die, Black Widow, Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnegie, Dune and Eternal, Spider-Man: No Way Home was the first true-to-life event film of 2021 – a movie that cannot be missed on the big screen, and deserves to be seen for the thrilling response of the audience alone.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Continues Growing Box Office

So, with Spidey now firmly entrenched in the record books, we have to think: Which upcoming film could possibly coincide with its success in 2022?

The Batman

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

Surprisingly, there are quite a few competitors in 2022, though whether they have all the ingredients to surpass Spidey is up for debate. An early choice for dominance at the box office is Matt Reeves’ The Batman, where Robert Pattinson donates the legendary Cowl to fight Paul Dano’s Ridler and Colin Farrell’s Penguin. Considering the character’s popularity, the positive buzz surrounding the film, and the various TV spin-offs that will only pique viewers’ curiosity, Batman has a definite path to $ 1 billion. The question is whether the general public is interested in another Batman movie following Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Jack Snyder’s “Snydervers”.

I imagine the film performs like a Nolan Bat movie and hits the billion-dollar mark, but there’s no turning back with its performance.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

April saw the release of the latest Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, but the previous two entries failed to reach the top of $ 1 billion, generating very little excitement from the most devoted fans, one might expect JK. Rowling’s latest expedition to the top at around $ 600-700M worldwide – and only if people like it.

Still, it’s been quite a while since the last Fantastic Beast, and given the continued popularity of Potters, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Secrets of Dumbledore shocked everyone and released a large number this spring.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

One popular title that could create a spide-level buzz is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is released on May 6 and carries the unique title of “Next MCU Film” and apparently No Way Home where with Doctor Strange Jumping. Left started there. Presumably in more multiverse, the re-shoots have added cameos from previous Marvel movies, which may attract curious movie viewers, while the addition of Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) will increase interest for those who follow Disney + ‘s Vandavision events to see where her story takes them. Interested.

After the success of Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: No Way Home Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it has managed to reach the top of বক্স 1 billion at the box office, so it is easy to assume that Doctor Strange will easily surpass Multiverse of Madness. That number and then some early May. The only question is whether Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch are big enough to fight Spider-Man; And whether the camos mentioned above are on the same level as Tobey and Andrew’s Spider-men.

Still, given its position as the first big movie of the summer, Multiverse of Madness should sell a lot of tickets to Doctor Strange, even if it has to fight the expected sequel top song: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion. His run

Jurassic World: Dominion

Speaking of which, while I hope the top songs do decent business, Jurassic World: Dominion Spidey has a great shot at making a box office return. Lest we forget, the original Jurassic World earned 20 208.8 million in its first weekend in 2015 and finally collected $ 652.3 million in the United States and $ 1.670 billion worldwide. Its 2018 sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was less impressive with 150 million opening, but still managed to hit $ 1.310 billion worldwide.

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

The Fallen Kingdom ended with a huge cliffhanger (like a far from home), and there is definitely a desire to see what happens when dinosaurs around the world run away. Given the huge gap between the movies and the positive buzz surrounding that great prequel, “The Battle at Big Rock,” as well as the offer made in front of the F9’s IMAX screening and the mid-summer release date (June 25), there’s no reason why listeners should not go Universal. Tickets for the latest Dino Romp will not be cut

Another reason for Dominion’s success is the Netflix animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which has successfully swept the Jurassic brand among young viewers in between two and three years. And we shouldn’t ignore the inclusions of the original Jurassic Park actors Sam Neal, Laura Darn and Jeff Goldblam, whose presence may be enough to push Dominion to the top.

The only thing that stands in the way of the Dominion is a crowded market where movies like Disney / Pixar’s Light Year, Illuminations Minions: The Rise of Guru, Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Adam are also seen. Otherwise, this tricycle must have all the ingredients to make a spidey box office behemoth. At the very least, it should surpass Incredibles 2’s $ 182 million to become the second highest June opener behind Jurassic World alone. Anyone can guess how high Dominion goes.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor: The fourth Thor movie called Love and Thunder is hard to predict. The film follows Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, following the Avengers: Endgame, and brings back Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waiti. Ragnarok raised a whopping $ 854 million in November 2017, easily surpassing the total of Thor ($ 449.3 million) and Thor: The Dark World ($ 644.8 million). Marvel’s latest feature will also feature Christian Bell as the villain, and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster as the God of Thunder.

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

Love and Thunder was released on July 8 and the month stays with them until July 29 hits the Black Adam Theater.

Again, the key issue here is the Marvel brand, which until Eternals, proved invincible at the box office in the last decade. After Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, will the audience get a little tired of another MCU entry so soon? Will families be ready for another trip to the theater after the huge radish shell out for Top Gun, Jurassic World, Light Year and Minions?

My guess is that Thor tops $ 1 billion worldwide at the box office, but not as much as “Jagarnot” on par with Spidey. Still a huge hit for Marvel and Hemsworth.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

The Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the first feature to introduce the whole multiverse concept to the world, and to go deeper with back-to-back entries, starting with Spider-Man: Across the Spider. Verse – first part in October. Into the Spider-Verse grossed a whopping $ 375.5 million worldwide in 2018, but has really grown in popularity among many, including you, making it one of the best superhero movies of all time.

Still, I don’t think this Spidey matched No Way Home in terms of popularity, but it still seems that Across the Spider-Verse has surpassed its groundbreaking predecessor fairly.

The Flash

With the success of No Way Home, obviously every studio is back in the IP of the past to see if they can do the same magic. Case in point: DC’s The Flash, or the latest entry in the distorted DCEU, which tries to “correct” following the “failure” of Jack Snyder’s flicks.

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

Flick’s ace in the hole is Michael Keaton’s Batman, whose inclusion should be enough to arouse the interest of an older audience, where Ben Affleck’s Batman will probably give an extra boost and attract curious Snyder fans.

Of course, the bat duo is only trying to establish Warner Bros. and DC Sasha Cal’s Supergirl as window dressing and has re-branded Ezra Miller’s Speedstar after its last big-screen appearance in the 2017 Justice League.

I’m interested to see how Keaton hires Cowley after a 30-year absence, especially given his role in the Batgirl movie, but will young viewers think of the 70-year-old Batman? Will the apparent re-imagining of The Flash Snyder-Verse annoy the brand’s fans and / or viewers who have enjoyed Jack Snyder’s Justice League? Is the Flash character popular enough to make big-time box office numbers? Is it going to be released very soon after Black Adam? Will Batman steal some of his lightning?

My guess is it earns about $ 800-900 million but if it actually gets better it could probably go a lot further.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

Similarly, I’m not sure what Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will create. The real Aquaman came in 2018 after the disappointing results of the Justice League and was able to hit $ 1.148 billion worldwide, largely due to its terrifying special effects and Jason Mammootty behind Star Power. The character appeared prominently in Jack Snyder’s Justice League earlier this year but was otherwise absent from the big screen. Will that prolonged drought help or hinder Aquaman’s performance?

Oddly enough, Aquaman’s success does not seem to depend on Black Adam or The Flash, as it is probably being produced as a standalone film, and has been more inspired by Mammoth’s charisma than its inclusion in DCEU. Again, if the original is able to make big numbers after the Justice League crash, Aquaman will handle a similar number on December 2nd.

However, there is a huge obstacle in the way of big people …

Avatar 2

I’ve lived long enough to know you would never count James Cameron. The Academy Award-winning director has been working on Avatar 2 for over a decade, which means the kids who saw the original in the theater all grew up with their own kids. Yes, it’s been so long.

Upcoming 2022 Box Office Domination Battle

Avatar was a groundbreaking motion picture event when it was released in 2009 and grossed $ 2 billion worldwide at the box office when there were less than 2,000 theaters in China. It’s insane, especially now that there are about 12,000 theaters in China and seemingly churning out huge blockbusters on a weekly basis. When the original incarnation was re-released earlier this year, the film grossed over $ 40 million, which helped make Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Avengers: Endgame a worldwide box office hit.

Considering the filmmaker’s genealogy, whose last two films, Avatar and Titanic, have become the highest-grossing films of all time, not to mention the long interval that adds a layer of nostalgia, mostly mixed with medium to large budget rental clusters. As I’ve seen over the past decade, there’s also the added benefit of seeing pictures of the event on a larger screen, and if Avatar 2 doesn’t exceed Spider’s preference, it’ll be a huge loss – man: No Way Home and the Avengers.

Yet, as many would probably point out, the incarnation did not last long in the public conscience. After its massive success, the film has disappeared and has garnered considerable response from (mostly) online outlets who stuck their noses in the film’s relatively simple story. Will viewers think about Avatar 2 after so many years?

My guess is yes. It doesn’t take more than a decade for a creative force like James Cameron to create a medium sequel. And the mere fact that he has more avatar films leads me to believe that there is something really exciting in his sleeve.

Time will tell, but I guess at this point next year we’ll talk about how James Cameron once again became the king of the world.

Another weekend, Sony’s superhero adventure “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has another great opportunity to dominate the box office.

The sequel to the comic book, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s favorite neighbor web-slinger, peaked at the domestic box office charts for the third consecutive weekend. “No Way Home” captured $ 52.7 million in New Year’s holiday frames, with internal numbers rising to $ 609 million. This extends to an epic streak for the latest Spidey Adventure, which continues to deliver the kind of ticket sales that were expected during pre-epidemic times. No other blockbuster has been able to come close to reaching similar box office heights, at least in the United States and Canada. After “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, the next highest-grossing tent of the Covid-19 is Disney and Marvel’s “Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, which grossed $ 224 million internally. Paramount’s terrifying sequel “Scream”, the fifth installment of the Slash series, will continue to flourish in Holland’s Tin Vigilante flour without any real competition until it opens on January 14.

For non-superhero enthusiasts, or perhaps those who have already seen “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in theaters more than once, Universal and Illumination’s animated musical “Sing 2” has enjoyed another relatively powerful weekend. The all-star voice cast film by Matthew McConnaghi, Ridge Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and many others grossed $ 19.6 million from 3,892 movies between Friday and Sunday, 12% less than its debut. Since landing on the big screen before Christmas, the well-reviewed “Sing 2” has grossed an impressive জন্য 89.6 million (for the epidemic period). Faced with movies that are not of the superhero variety yet still depicting the headwinds, the original 2016 film “Singh” sold much more tickets, eventually grossing $ 270 million in the state and $ 634 million worldwide.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, there wasn’t much to sing about. So, with Spidey now firmly entrenched in the record books, we have to think: Which upcoming film could possibly coincide with its success in 2022?

Spider-Man: No Way Home setting world record

Disney and 20th Century “The Kings Man”, a prequel to the extended “Kingsman” cinematic universe, landed third place with 1 4.5 million from 3,180 theaters. It was only 24% less than the opening weekend ticket sales, however, its box office receipts were not strong enough to start. So far, Spy Comedy has collected 19.5 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, “The Kings Man” added another .1 14.1 million from 22 overseas markets, bringing its total to .8 47.8 million worldwide.

At No. 4, Lionsgate’s crowd-pleasing sports drama “American Underdog” grossed $ 3.9 million from 2,813 venues, pushing the North American figure to $ 14.9 million. The inspirational film about Kurt Warner’s chances of becoming a two-time NFL champion has been well received by audiences (at least those who went to see the film) with “A +” Cinemasco. Unfortunately, the kind of face that needs to be talked about for ticket sales is not getting high scores from moviegoers.

The Matrix Resurrection

The Matrix Resurrection” dropped to fifth place after scrapping $ 3.5 million from 3,552 positions over the weekend while playing at HBO Max. A 67% drop since it opened, the biggest drop in the top 15 on the domestic box office charts. The fourth “Matrix” movie, again starring Keanu Reeves as the smooth cybercriminal neo and Carrie-Ann Moss trinity, will premiere on HBO Max the day the last Warner Bros. movie (for now) debuted in theaters. The studio’s strategy of keeping the 2021 slate simultaneously streaming may raise awareness around HBO Max, which had a weak launch in 2020, but it has drastically reduced ticket sales for every movie released on the big screen.

Other notable releases in the top 10 include Disney’s “West Side Story”, which pocketed $ 2.1 million from 2,690 venues. Overall, a remake of director Steven Spielberg’s classic musical grossed just .6 29.6 million in North America and $ 47 million worldwide, costing প্রশ 100 million to make the acclaimed movie a disastrous result.

The final season ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes might feel like a full season

Last Season of Game of Thrones

Is it the last fate of every great show to be hated first? Sopranos’ infamous cut-to-black finale was ridiculed and debated year after year after its first broadcast in 2007, but now with some distance the show has regained its rightful place in culture as the gold standard of modern television drama. Will its successor, Game of Thrones (originally pitched on HBO as “The Sopranos meets Middle-earth”) withstand the same shocks and tensions? It’s only been two years since the final season of Fantasy Epic was terrified by viewers, but a lot has happened in these two years. In a world full of fire and anguish, the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones holds much better than you might remember, moving away from the impossible expectation of a zeitgeist-transformative work broadcasting its ending in real time.

It’s really about “The Bells”. One of the main creative decisions of Thrones’ production last season was to avoid the show’s typical 10-episode format for six super-sized installments. Although not all hour-and-a-half episodes are created equally, the final season typically depends on two episodes: “The Long Night”, which depicts the last surviving man against the Knight King’s nectar forces, and “The Bells”. , Which features the long-awaited Kings Landing victory by Deneris Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). Most of the other four episodes are about going to and coming from this climatic clash, so the success or failure of Season 8 really depends on the effectiveness of the two main episodes.

The final season 'Game of Thrones' episodes might feel like a full season
game of thrones season 8 episode 6 sansa crown

Some viewers have complained about plot shortcuts or condensed time that made it possible to cover huge distances in a single episode instead of spending the entire season from King’s Landing to Riverrun, but if you enjoy the effects of those chapters it seems easy to cut Shows some relaxation in service. We’re not in the business of handing out participatory trophies, but it’s worth noting that Wester’s story is so long, complex, and elaborate that the original author, George R. R. Martin, has yet to finish it – perhaps using his own shortcuts to deny it and still reach his final game. Is working painfully through the various plot strategies required for. Some of us remain confident that he will finally get there, but the makers of Thrones did not have the luxury of waiting until the perfect resolution was finally out; HBO has no endless demands on unlimited money or audience attention.

“The Long Night” was the biggest battle episode of Game of Thrones, which is something to say. It was purposely created to surpass previous highs like “Hardhome” and “The Battle of the Bastards” by the same director who directed these entries, Miguel Sapochnik. But when those fights took place in the cold light of day, the main creative decision that Spocnik and his team made in “The Long Night” was to immerse the audience and the actors in the same darkness that the characters were fighting. The only light came from the flames that the living used as their main weapon against the dead. As James Hibbard reports in the cover story of EW’s Final Season, this has created an almost unbearably hellish experience for the movie “The Long Night”, where the actors and crew members suffocate in the smoke and work through their own long nights. This sometimes makes it difficult for viewers to follow the action, which damaged the initial reception of the episode.

Filmmakers like cinematographer Fabian Wagner insisted that viewers did not dial their TV settings correctly, but the simple fact is that the episode is extremely chaotic. Each subsequent revision improved my perception of it; Once the general pressure is clear, it is easy to enjoy the standout moments. Lord of the Rings was never out of the mind of Game of Thrones, but in this case the show avoids the approach that Peter Jackson took to filming the night siege of Helms Deep, where all the fights are clearly visible in the blue light. In contrast, Sapochnik and Thrones Shorner’s David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to portray an early battle between life and death, darkness and light, ice and fire. This method bears fruit in some spectacular sequences, such as John Snow (Kit Harrington) and Danny following the Dragonback Knight King above the clouds, or Dothraki confronts the group as they ride their flaming Schmitter, only one in the irresistible darkness to make their torches disappear.

But there’s a reason the show was called Game of Thrones, and not an Ice and Fire song like Martin’s books. TV adaptations have always fueled human drama, which is why the single most compelling sequel to “The Long Night” is Arya Stark’s (Macy Williams) desperate attempt to hide from a packet of zombies that have infiltrated the Winterfell Library. When he slips into a bookcase and throws volume across the room as a scattering, the episode skillfully transforms into the horror of surviving a fantasy epic. This is another element that grows better with each rewatch; When you know that the Aryans are lucky enough to hit the Knight King in the end, this cat-and-mouse game couldn’t be more of a turning point.

Game of Thrones season 8
Game of Thrones season 8

The episode is certainly not without its flaws. There are a number of deaths, as you might expect, but they all seem a little more convenient. Game of Thrones kills characters such as Edward Stark (Sean Bean) and Joffrey Barathion (Jack Gleason), whom viewers consider to be the most important characters in the story. In contrast, the killing of characters such as Dolores Ed (Ben Crompton) and Berrick Dondarion (Richard Dormer) did not have the same effect after their stories ended. Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) and Jorah Mormont (Ian Glenn), the most prominent dust-up characters in the White Walkers, both managed to save themselves through heroic exits, while the death of Best Game of Thrones was unexpected and humiliating.

Meanwhile, the survival of some of the characters was surprising. It’s a thing made by zombie hords for famous warriors like Jaime Lannister (Nicholas Coster-Waldo) and Brian (Gandolin Christie), but the only explanation for surviving a bunch of monsters trying to eat his mouth is the armor plot plot armor. . If it was necessary to surround Sam for the final game of the show, they should have found a way to get him out of the fight. Weakening his surviving realism against impossible adversity, Saponic apparently made his touching film and tried to capture your face with fire and brimstone.

The Green Dragon Regal should have gone down in “The Long Night” as well. Already there is a scene where he crashes into a world full of zombies, his rider John, finally leaving to enter the battle on foot. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Regal failed to recover from his injury, which will alleviate one of the biggest fan complaints about the final season: Its place in “The Last of the Starks” mostly seems to be about setting up some action in an episode otherwise the characters get to know each other what the audience already knows and create ideas that tell each other. Perhaps Danny’s attack on Sessey Lannister (Lena Heidi) could be an equal fight.

At the time it was easy to get bogged down in such expectations; I myself wrote a short article for this website, explaining the history of Captain Harry Strickland (Mark Risman), the mercenary commander of the Golden Company, who seemed ready to lead Cersi’s defense against the Dragon Queen. Instead, he was rather ridiculously sent to “The Bells” for just a few minutes before he uttered a single line of conversation.

Man, I like “The Bells.” The Game of Thrones deserves a glorious, bloody, world-shaking climax. My complaints about the abundance of facilities and predictions in “The Long Night” were largely dispelled by “The Bells”, where viewers expected a jag. Yet Danny’s destruction at Kings Landing doesn’t come out of nowhere. The episode’s “pre-started” prologue ends with the voice-overs of many of the characters talking about the Targaryens during the series. The last line before the episode begins, with a shot of Danny’s disturbing expression at the public execution of Sarsair in Misandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), Danny’s long-dead brother Visaris (Harry Lloyd), his first painful: “You don’t want to wake the dragon, do you?” Seeds of Targaryen Hubris were planted throughout the show. The incestuous Dragon family was clearly obsessed with madness and greed; Even their most recent brilliant descendant, Danny’s late older brother Regar, has been variously described as a wicked rapist or handsome prince, depending on who you ask. This sequel to Brad Crumbs may have been hard to remember when Final Season first aired two years after its predecessor (the longest interval in Shore history), but now that it’s in one place on HBO Max, it should be easy to see the line through.

Yes, Deneris often spoke with populist rhetoric because he did fiery justice to slaves, but Game of Thrones sometimes had no show of how violence cools. Some people deserve to die, but killing them in the pursuit of power is always a dirty thing, the show has repeatedly told us. In “The Bells” the Lannisters finally get them. Some of us waited for the whole show to earn that good, and the characters in the show waited even longer. This sack of Kings Landing is the exact opposite of an unseen event on the show and still speaks all the time, when the Lannisters treacherously attacked the capital at the end of Robert’s revolt and killed and raped the surviving Targaryen princes to prove their power. . Yet closing the bookend on Tywin Lannister’s brutality made it no less frightening to see Tyrion drag the weeping bodies of Cersi and Jaime from the ruins of the castle. Revenge will always keep you cool.
